Children need parents to respond when they need it, to calm them when they are upset, to soothe them when they are scared and to play with enthusiasm with them when they are ready to have fun. But when parents are exhausted and alone or depressed, they are less receptive to the children’s needs. The baby’s cry only irritate them, the fears of the babies disturb them and their cheer to play is felt to be too exaggerated.
